Excerpt from "Betrayal"
At the time, I was interested in something as simple as an action that manifested the difference between internal state and external presentation. I named it betrayal because ambiguity is important. What or who is being betrayed? I wanted to create a scenario where you were forced to watch someone inflict pain on themself, but not so severely to be unbearable. Simultaneously, on the other screen, I wanted to have a respite for the viewer that was also a confrontation. When she is looking calmly out at you, staring you directly in the eyes while simultaneously hitting herself, what is she asking of you? Why is she doing this to herself? And what does it mean for a woman to hit herself?
