The leaves, made of three different colors of paper (dark blue woven with glitter, light green iridescent and dark green matte), represented five different trees, for which there were wall labels. They were the leaves of an Olive tree, Honduran Rosewood, Bodhi, Southern Magnolia and Baobab trees. Each tree was chosen for its historical, religious, political and spiritual significance. Specifically, the Bodhi tree is what Buddha sat under, the Baobab is the oldest tree in all of Africa. In the Old Testament the Olive tree is said to be the tree of life. Most high-end musical instruments are made from Honduran Rosewood and the Southern Magnolia is the state flower of Louisiana and was totally wiped out in Hurricane Katrina. These mobiles were hung on the interior diameter of the circle.

Additionally, the lights were set to dim on a timer, every twenty minutes, so that one’s eyes were forced to adjust to the space and recording of crickets in the meadow at night at my childhood home in Georgia played on a two-hour loop. Finally, there was a performance where two beautiful women, dressed seductively in tight, green dresses, wearing gold flowers in their hair and jewelry whispered a set of desires to gallery-goers. They began by whispering material wants, then switched to desires for themselves in life, such as “I want to be financially and professionally successful” and culminated with such wishes as “I want for education and health care to be accessible to everyone”.
